More than 16,000 farms and ranches raise over 3.7 million cattle in South Dakota.  South Dakota ranks 5th in beef cows with just over 1.6 million cows and 7th in total cattle and calves on feed.  Just under 40% of the total cash receipts of agriculture commodities are from cattle.  South Dakota is the only state where beef cows actually outnumber people 2 to 1!!  Because beef production is an integral part of the livelihood of many South Dakota farms and ranches, more than half of your department's faculty work in the area of beef cattle management.  Our units are devoted to providing current research to producers and our teaching program is focused on training students to become leaders in beef production and management.  Our new Beef Lectureship Series invites industry leaders to visit with our students monthly.  If you have an interest in beef production and ranch management, please visit us; we believe we can serve your needs.
