Internship Overview

Objectives of the Program

1. To give students an opportunity to participate in meaningful educational experiences consistent with their educational objectives.

2. To permit students to obtain the best combination of on-campus and off-campus educational experiences.

3. To help students make more realistic choices of courses during the semesters following the program experience.

4. To allow employers to evaluate the employment potential of the students.

5. To allow students to evaluate a particular career objective.

Requirements and Regulations of the Program

1. A maximum of four credits are applicable toward the B.S. degree in Agriculture and Biological Science.

2. Junior standing is required and student must have at least one on-campus semester to complete before graduation.

3. Only students with a GPA of 2.0 or higher are eligible.

4. Grades will be based on the A-F system.

5. A stipend may be provided, but where credit is to be allowed, it must not interfere with maximizing the educational experience.

6. Students should not attempt to enter programs where they have already gained considerable proficiency.

7. Credit will not be given for narrow work experience.

8. Finalization of each student's program will include an interview with supervising staff member and a completed learning contract which must be signed by the student, employer, faculty coordinator and department head.

9. A program should be finalized prior to pre-registration preceding the summer the program is to be taken. Only in exceptional cases will a program be approved in less than thirty days prior to the summer the program is to be taken.

10. Regular tuition charges will be paid at the time of final registration.

How to Proceed

1. Pick up an application form in the Animal & Range Sciences main office.

2. Fill out the form which initially involves a visit with your advisor. If he indicates that AS 494 credits will fit into your curriculum, then you may further proceed.

3. If the Department does not have any specific cooperators in mind, compatible with your interests, you can do some inquiring yourself. Visit with some potential cooperators who you feel would be interested and have something to offer.

4. Submit the completed application form to Kelly Bruns, Animal Science Complex Room 217 .

5. The student will be responsible for arranging for transportation to and from the place of employment, for housing and board and for his protection and coverage for health and accident insurance, workmen's compensation and liability insurance.

Evaluation

1. The Faculty coordinator has the primary responsibility in the evaluation of a student's program. He will visit with each student at least once during the period of internship.

2. A bi-weekly report will be made by the student to the Faculty Coordinator.

3. A final paper covering the total educational experience will be prepared by the student. Copies will be submitted to the employer and the faculty.

4. The assignment of the final grade will be by the Faculty Coordinator in consultation with the employer.

5. At the conclusion of the program, the student's file, which will include the final report, weekly reports and evaluation of forms will be submitted to the Department Head's Office for filing.
