Research
Our research program focuses on plant-herbivore interactions. Over the past 8
years we have examined grazing at the individual plant level, and have documented and
compared patterns of utilization (frequency, timing, and level of use) for several grazing
systems. We are also examining plant responses to actual patterns of utilization in an
effort to determine grazing patterns which are detrimental to plant survival and/or
production. Our goal is to determine the patterns of utilization that lead to losses of
important plant species in the Mixed Grass Prarie and then to identify grazing
regimes/systems that allow us to avoid/minimize those patterns. Ultimately this should
lead to the development of grazing prescriptions that will accomplish specific vegetation
and livestock objectives on these rangelands.
We are also involved in the identification of parameters important in determining the Site
Conservation Threshold and evaluation of Site Conservation Rating (or rangeland health).
This includes development of state-and-transition models for important ecological sites.
