POSITION
The Animal and Range Sciences Department at South Dakota State University seeks a dynamic individual for the position of Department Head to provide strong and effective vision and leadership. The Department is a unit of the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences, and the Department Head reports to the Dean of the College. This is a 12-month, administrative appointment with academic rank of Associate Professor or Professor in the Department of Animal and Range Sciences. Tenure status is negotiable.
QUALIFICATIONS
An earned Ph.D. in Animal Science, Range Science or a related field; minimum six years of full-time professional experience in one of the above areas; productive history in research, teaching, or outreach; skilled in oral, written, and interpersonal communication; and demonstrated effective budget and personnel management. Must have the ability to advocate programs to a variety of statewide constituency groups; commitment to and understanding of animal agriculture and rangeland resources; commitment to the Land Grant philosophy and system. In addition to the above requirements, experience in oversight responsibilities of livestock and or range resource facilities and professional experience in an academic environment are desirable. National recognition in a professional area of expertise will be valued.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide effective management of the department; provide leadership to develop and maintain strong, relevant research, teaching, and extension programs stressing excellence across the programs; effectively communicate with the faculty and staff; provide leadership to establish goals and objectives for the department and build strong working relationships; recruit, evaluate and retain faculty, staff and students; develop and manage budgets; manage properties, represent the department in all official communications with the college and university; foster and build strong working relationships with other disciplines and commodity and constituency groups.
ORGANIZATION
South Dakota State University is a land grant institution with 11,700 students. The Department of Animal and Range Sciences includes 25 full-time faculty positions instructing over 300 undergraduate students in Animal, and Range Sciences programs. Graduate degrees offered are Master of Science in Animal Science, Doctor of Philosophy in Animal Science, and Doctor of Philosophy in Biological Sciences. The Department manages eight on-campus research and teaching facilities, including beef, sheep, swine, equine, and meats. Department of Animal and Range Sciences invite applications to fill ten-month, tenure track position (60% extension, 30% research, 10% teaching).
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop a dynamic extension program and a complementary research program in beef nutrition and feedlot management. The successful candidate will provide educational leadership to a growing beef feedlot industry in the State. This person will provide leadership in the transfer of information and technologies to county extension educators and South Dakota beef backgrounders and feedlot operators, and they will serve as a liaison between the University, the livestock industry, and other state livestock agencies. This faculty member will work cooperatively with other specialists and extension educators to develop effective, interdisciplinary educator training and clientele programs. The successful candidate will be expected to utilize a variety of delivery techniques, including traditional meetings, individual consultations, intensive short courses, and Internet and distance educational technologies to reach a diverse audience of clientele. The research program should be designed to enhance the extension education effort. It should include both independent and collaborative studies with primary emphasis in beef feedlot nutrition and management systems. Successful grantsmanship and participation in multidisciplinary and multi-state activities will be expected. This faculty member will also be responsible for teaching one undergraduate course on feedlot management and they will be expected to recruit and train quality graduate students.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Earned Ph.D. (completed by appointment date) in Animal Science or a closely related field with an emphasis in beef feedlot nutrition and management. Must be able to interact and communicate effectively (verbal, written and electronic) with colleagues, staff, beef producers and other clientele. An in-depth knowledge of the beef feedlot industry and experience in feedlot management are also required. Ability to acquire a valid South Dakota driver’s license is required. Experience in delivering educational programs via the Internet and other distance education technology is desired. Experience in teaching and/or extension desired. Ability to carry out responsibilities listed above.

Lecturer

Department of Animal and Range Sciences invited applications to fill nine-month, non-tenure track positions, with an annual term appointment.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching responsibilities will include livestock judging, a first-year student orientation course, Introductory Animal Science Laboratories, and coaching the Intercollegiate Livestock Judging Team and the Meat Animal Evaluation Team. This position will be responsible for supervision of the Animal Science Arena, and management of transient livestock for teaching. Recruitment and advising of undergraduate students, and securing external funds in support of the Livestock Judging program will be expected. The opportunities exist to pursue a graduate degree.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Earned B.S. or M.S. completed by appointment date in Animal Science or a closely related field. The successful candidate must have a thorough knowledge of the livestock industry and an understanding of the principles of meat animal evaluation and livestock judging. Successful participation on intercollegiate livestock judging and meat animal evaluation teams is required. Must be able to teach, interact and communicate (verbal, written and electronic) with colleagues, staff, students and other clientele. The ability to recruit and effectively advise undergraduate students is required. Knowledge and experience in livestock production and management systems common to the region are desired.

TITLE: Assistant Professor in Equine Production and Management. This is a ten-month, 60% teaching, 40% Extension tenure-track faculty position appointment in the Animal and Range Sciences Department at South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD. Summer salary is available for the first four years.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Earned Ph.D. in Animal Science or closely related field or DVM degree, completed by appointment date with an emphasis in horse production and management. Successful candidate must be able to teach, interact and communicate effectively (verbally, written and electronically) with colleagues, staff, students, producers and other clientele. Experience in, and an in-depth understanding of, the horse industry and ability to teach equine classes. Experience with and/or interest in working with 4-H members and/or underserved youth. Ability to successfully recruit students from both rural and urban populations. Securing external funding in support of the equine science program.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Disciplinary training in reproduction and/or nutrition preferred. Knowledge, skill, and experience in production and management systems of livestock industries.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Develop a hands-on program of instruction that supports the mission of the Department of Animal and Range Sciences in equine science. Teaching responsibilities will include a portion of the following courses depending on the candidate’s expertise and interests: Horse Production, Equine Reproduction, Equine Nutrition, Stable Management, Equine Health and Diseases, Horse Management, and Equitation. The potential exists to teach other classes within the Animal Science curriculum. The position has oversight of the SDSU Horse Unit and collaborates with other faculty for efficient use of the SDSU Horse Unit for teaching and outreach activities. Recruitment, mentoring and advising of undergraduate students will be expected. The successful candidate will develop a positive relationship with all segments of the horse industry, will develop an outreach/extension program focusing on, but not limited to, youth, and will serve as a resource to extension educators and 4-H horse program.

Title: Assistant Professor in Meat Science. This is a nine-month, 50% Extension-50% Ag Experiment Station, tenure-track faculty position in the Animal and Range Sciences Department of South Dakota State University. The possibility of summer salary may be available.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate is expected to develop a nationally-recognized meat science extension and research program. Extension efforts include, but are not limited to, supporting the SD Certified Beef program and providing outreach programs for SD meat processors addressing product development, quality and safety and HACCP training. A strong research program capable of attracting extramural funding and outstanding graduate students should be developed based on his/her expertise. A modern meat laboratory is available for both research and outreach activities. Numerous opportunities exist to establish collaborations with faculty in meats, nutrition, animal breeding and/or food safety.
